Self – confidence is crucial for mental health and well – being, so people often seek ways to boost it. Self – confidence involves self – awareness, trust, and the courage to act based on one’s beliefs. It is closely related to self – esteem and a positive self – identity. Improving self – confidence can enhance the quality of life. According to Christopher Peterson (2006), self – confidence is associated with various aspects such as life satisfaction, happiness, positive coping skills, optimism, achievement, and a sense of control over life.
Self – confidence is something that everyone can and should possess. It’s normal to feel that your self – confidence needs improvement. Here are some ways to improve and enhance self – confidence.
Self – Efficacy and Success Boost Self – Confidence
Achievements contribute to enhancing self – confidence (Gerber, 2003). When a person accomplishes something meaningful to them, even if it’s a small thing, they will have a sense of achievement. This enhances their self – efficacy, which is a component of self – confidence and relates to the degree to which a person believes they can achieve something. Achievements and success help improve self – efficacy, and together, they enhance overall self – confidence. Then, when a person’s self – confidence is enhanced, they will have more courage, optimism, and a proactive spirit. In turn, this increases the effort they put into tasks and leads to more success. Experiencing success boosts self – confidence, and enhanced self – confidence helps achieve more success, creating an upward – spiraling cycle.
Self – confidence is related to two concepts: agency and path. Agency refers to a person’s determination to achieve their goals. A person’s belief that they can find a way (path) to achieve their goals is called path. Experiencing success, along with having agency and path, can boost self – confidence (Peterson, 2006). It makes sense that experiencing success helps improve self – confidence. However, when a person lacks self – confidence, experiencing success can be daunting. Fortunately, there are ways to boost self – confidence as you create success in your life.
Boosting Self – Confidence When You Doubt Yourself
Indeed, experiencing success boosts self – confidence, and self – confidence leads to success. But how can a person enter this cycle if they are not very confident in themselves and their abilities? What if they strive for success but fail? What should they do then?

First of all, relax and reduce the pressure you put on yourself. Self – confidence comes not only from achieving success in life but also from making mistakes and being imperfect. Did you know that the more you recognize your imperfections, the more your self – confidence can grow? An important source of self – confidence is self – acceptance. Self – acceptance and enhancing self – confidence are processes involving thoughts and behaviors. The pressure of perfectionism increases anxiety and reduces self – confidence. It makes people reluctant to set goals and pursue the goals they have set. In other words, the pursuit of perfection reduces a person’s agency and path, thus destroying self – confidence. Self – confidence comes from accepting yourself as a whole person, with all your strengths and weaknesses.
Some ways to accept yourself and boost self – confidence include:
- Pay attention to the thoughts that undermine your self – confidence. Think about it. How accurate are they? What evidence can you find to prove that these negative thoughts are wrong?
- Replace critical thoughts with more realistic and positive ones. Keep doing this until you believe these new thoughts (this takes time, so be patient with yourself).
- Clearly define your goals, big and small. Knowing what you want is the first step to success.
- Determine the steps to achieve your goals. Every step you take is an achievement that will boost your self – confidence.
- Build positive relationships with others. Reach out and connect with at least one person.
- Practice assertiveness: Expressing yourself while acknowledging others can boost self – confidence.
- Look for role models from the past or present. Whose self – confidence do you respect and admire? How can you follow their example?
- Allow yourself to make mistakes and love yourself for them.
- Keep practicing, because enhancing self – confidence is a process, not something that happens overnight.

Setting clear goals and defining what you want to achieve will provide direction for your actions. At the same time, pay attention to your inner thoughts, understand your true needs and feelings, which will help you better understand yourself. Building positive connections with others, obtaining positive experiences and feedback through communication and cooperation, will enhance your social skills and self – confidence.
Imagine yourself as a role model in a certain field, envision what you would look like achieving outstanding success in that area. This will stimulate your inner motivation and enthusiasm. Fully accepting your strengths and weaknesses, recognizing that everyone has unique value, will help you build self – esteem and self – confidence. Patiently and persistently practice these methods, keep working hard and making progress. This will make you more determined and confident when facing challenges.
Through these methods, your self – confidence will gradually improve. As your self – confidence grows, you will find it easier to achieve success, whether it’s career advancement or improvement in your personal life. Success brings more sense of achievement and satisfaction, which in turn further enhances your self – confidence. Self – confidence is not static; it can be continuously improved and enhanced through continuous effort and practice. As your self – confidence increases, you will find that the quality of your life is also constantly improving. You will face various challenges in life more positively and enjoy a more fulfilling and happy life.
